Over the last century there have been
dramatic changes in the major causes of death in developed-world
countries. In the late 1800s death was mainly the result of infectious
diseases such as scarlet fever, diphtheria and tuberculosis. Typically
these diseases involved a relatively short period of illness followed
by resolution — either by death or by recovery. Now, however, the major
diseases of our country and century are chronic in nature;
usually there are multiple causes, with a long period between these
causes occurring and symptoms appearing, and often with the disease
leaving the person involved sick or incapacitated for a long period.
Cardiovascular disease, one of a major cause of death in
the world, is an example of this. Risks associated with this condition
include immutable factors such as age and gender, but also modifiable
risks such as smoking, high cholesterol, and blood pressure levels,
with other behavioral factors, such as stress and exercise level,
implicated. People will engages in these contributing behaviors for a
considerable time before the diseases manifest itself; in case as a
heart attack or with some other cardiovascular symptom; and recovery
can be a slow process. A similar pattern holds for some forms of
cancer; the other major cause of death in western countries. These changes in disease patterns require a modification of the way
in which we attempt to cope with illness. Increasingly, it is prevention that is accepted as the most
cost-efficient method of health care, whereas the
majority of resources have been devoted to curative medicine. The
preventative approach requires various
environmental
changes. We must modify our behavior to decrease the probability of
