Electrical in the form of shortwave diathermy is a convenient way in skilled hands of applying heat to the deeper parts of the body. Electricity has also occasionally been used to stimulate muscles wasted as a result of rheumatism to contract more powerfully; it is not very helpful unless, at the same time, there is something else wrong with the muscles.
Electricity may also be used to produce a prickling sensation near the joint, which is an elegant and accurate way of applying 'counter irritation' to relive pain, even if it if no more effective than other ways.
All in all, then , electrical treatment if not something you can apply yourself and, even in skilled hands with the right equipment, it has not much to offer to relieve, let alone cure, your rheumatism. |
